Basha Gold
Galanos Couture Ivory Silk Black Raffia Hat
Despite not being a household name today, James Galanos is one of the quintessential American designers working in the 50s-90s. Having most notably designed for former first lady, Nancy Reagan, Galanos’ aesthetic has a redefined formal, feminine affinity.
Indicative of his refined style, this hat is masterfully crafted with the crown being draped in a fine ivory silk in the style of a turban, a large floppy brim made from black raffia radiates from there. The shingled texture of the raffia alongside the delicate folds of the ivory silk provide a visual harmony that exemplify the classic hard-and-soft design trope. This hat exudes société and is a luxurious, couture accessory that is required of an upscale wardrobe.
Measurements:
Brim width: 6 inches
Circumference: about 22 inches
The interior of the hat is fully lined with black silk. A band of velvet trim precedes the grosgrain ribbon sweatband where the Galanos label has been hand sewn. In excellent condition, high-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.
