From Tao Kurihara comes this amazing shrug from her fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection. As the designer and protégée of Rei Kawakubo only staged less than a dozen shows that The Independent’s Susannah Frankel said “were always a sight for sore eyes,” it’s a rare find and a true gem to behold.

The cropped coat with a cutout back enchants in a silver metallic fabric, which is then hand-embellished with an appliqué of charming black ribbon daisies. They tumble and twist below a collar bursting with ruffles and rosettes—their raw edges full of character. Billowy sleeves that spiral into extra-long cuffs lend a lighthearted finish to the whole affair.

“Everything I create has to be individual,” Kurihara once said. “I therefore don’t make clothes with what people might like in mind. Rather, I make clothes that I think are beautiful.” With this coat, she has created a collector’s piece that has accomplished both.

This fall 2008 Comme des Garçons shrug from Tao Kurihara is in excellent condition. It still has its original tags. The silhouette buttons at the neck and is open at the front; the back is cut out, with the exception of a yoke that crosses from shoulder to shoulder.
