Gucci Tom Ford Black Golden Velvet Cut-Out Bustier Runway Top, 2005

$0

In the shadow of Tom Ford’s success with designing for Italian luxury label, Gucci, Alessandra Facchinetti was charged with maintaining the design momentum that Ford had created until his departure. The Spring 2005 collection hints at a classic Ford collection: carefully coordinated color palettes, tailored fits, and brooding sexual undertones. Playing to this femme fatale trope, this paneled cut-out top is created from sheer black spandex and black satin with ochre yellow velvet accents around the bust.

The opaque black satin is used minimally around the bust and for bordering a geometric detail near the shoulders while sheer portions of spandex take center stage. The front cut-outs at mid-torso reveal the wearer’s sides which transition to the almost completely open back, secured by three horizontal straps. The sleeves are only attached at the top, presenting a dialogue about the complete and incomplete. Although the sheer lower panel extends to a mini dress length, it is intended to ride up higher as seen on the runway.
