Vintage Yves Saint Laurent Silk Safari Tunic Top
Yves Saint Laurent’s first safari tunic was what Virginie Mouzat of Le Figaro called a “total outsider.” The designer made only one, following a request by editors at Vogue Paris for a July/August 1968 spread starring Veruschka. Franco Rubartelli photographed the model wearing the top in the middle of the brush—her hat askew, front laces undone, ring-shaped belt about the waist—and it caused an unbelievable sensation.
“Short, sexy…it embodied the manifesto of liberty that was shaking up wardrobes,” Mouzat said. Saint Laurent immediately started producing the “Saharienne” for his new Rive Gauche ready-to-wear boutiques—and, to this day, his name is synonymous with the look.
This safari tunic is a button-down version of the silhouette, made from a luxurious sueded silk. The lined jacket is tailored to perfection, with a notched collar, pointed flap pockets at the chest and shoulder, diagonal pointed flap pockets at the hip, a front and back yolk, barrel sleeves and side slits. A great vintage find, this is a piece of fashion history and a classic that can easily be worn every day.
