Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons Runway Blue White Circles Illusion Top, 2015

$0

From Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dalí to Yves Saint Laurent and Piet Mondrian, fashion designers have often turned to fine artists to inspire their collections. But few of those influences have resulted in as intriguing a body of work as Junya Watanabe’s spring/summer 2015 show. For it, the Japanese designer (and former pattern-maker to Rei Kawakubo) drew upon Sonia Delaunay’s Orphist paintings.

By taking the flat shapes and bright colors that defined them and incorporating them into three-dimensional clothing, he created looks that are museum-worthy and historical in their own right. This top was part of that collection that Vogue’s Sarah Mower called a “jolly geometry exercise.” Brilliantly tailored from faux patent leather, vinyl and sheer gauze, it sits like a canvas. It builds in dimensionality by revealing what’s underneath. The vibrant blues and optic white make it a graphic statement for a collector with a passion for avant-garde fashion.
