Comme des Garçons 2011 Black Sheer Gathered Long Skirt
On the eve of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s much-anticipated Rei Kawakubo retrospective comes this beautifully sublime skirt created by the Japanese designer. From her fall 2011 Comme des Garçons collection, the ruffled confection perfectly encapsulates why she will be only the second living person to be honored by an exhibition at the Costume Institute (the first being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983).
The black sheer skirt falls gracefully from the waistline into an impeccable collage of asymmetrical pleats and tiny frills that simultaneously evokes Victorian dressing and the avant-garde.
“The originality of the workmanship was stunning, and often in a completely wearable way,” Vogue’s Sarah Mower said of the skirt and similar collection items when they debuted.
“That’s why adherents of the Comme way of thinking will be wanting to get their hands on these pieces as soon as they can.” Now even more highly collectible, this skirt will be an item to cherish for many additional years to come.
