Balenciaga Ghesquière Sculpted Floral Print Mini Dress Runway, 2008

Designer Nicolas Ghesquière reported to Vogue that the S08 Balenciaga collection was “exploring new territory”, however, this collection pays homage to classic Balenciaga techniques simply with a more youthful and edgy flair. Introducing vivid colors and nontraditional fabrics for couture, the 2008 collection captures silhouettes and a sculptural element popularized by Balenciaga himself.

Made from silk, this jumper style dress features an impressionist floral motif. Bright summer colors of yellow-orange and poppy mingle with pale shades of rose as strokes of blue sky and leaf greens complete the picture. With a classic bodice, this dress is tailored throughout the bust and torso with straps on either side for additional support.

The skirt is made from an Ultratech neoprene allowing for the classic bubble shape. Pleats around the waist provide more volume to the skirt. Adding a degree of boudoir edge, a corset lace detail is incorporated at the centre front of the skirt. This flirty, new take on couture can be seen as look #16 from that season’s runway and is a perfect cocktail or casual event look.
