Bessi Multicolored Silk Jersey Chiffon Sleeves Maxi dress, 1970s
Starting in 1950, Italian designer Averado Bessi began producing memorable styles that donned multicolored flora pints to fluid, lightweight fabrics. The colorful nature prints are not only limited to the exterior, Bessi garments tend to be made from fabrics of natural fibers such as cotton, wool, or silk. Although the Bessi prints and patterns have a particular demure aesthetic, his fabric designs have been likened to those of notable print designer Emilio Pucci.
Filled with a sketchy, almost impressionist motif of moss green, cornflower blue, vermillion, azure, carnation pink with accents of crème and pastel green upon a field of sea foam green, this scoop neck dress is made of silk jersey with sheer silk bishop sleeves. The sleeves are set into a dropped armhole that provides for a more relaxed fit that reflects the eased fit throughout the bodice and the skirt.
A geometric band accent is utilized throughout to create the rounded neckline as well as the cuffs. This banded geometric feature encircles the waist, near, and at the hem that falls approximately to ankle length. Similar to Pucci, this implied marshland nature print is signed throughout the dress with the Bessi signature.
Size estimate: XS/S

Unlined, this dress is made from an extremely comfortable silk jersey. Though it has adequate stretch, it is closed at centre back by a metal zip and the cuffs can be fastened with snaps. This Bessi design is in very good wearable condition with evidence of light wear consistent with the age and use of the garment.
There are some faint spots that did not come out with cleaning; however, they blend in with the exotic print and are only noticeable upon close inspection. The metal zip also glides with lessened ease. Professionally cleaned and pressed, high-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.
