1974 Yves Saint Laurent Russian Paisley Quilted Satin Jacket Documented YSL
Never one for subtlety, French designer Yves Saint Laurent experimented with a broad palette of international inspiration throughout his life. Saint Laurent, who was born in French Algeria, was frequently heralded for invigorating the somewhat hum-drum fashion scene in Paris during the early 1970s. This 1974 vintage jacket is a perfect example of Saint Laurent’s ability to reimagine the beauty of historic motifs and merge them into contemporary style.
Featuring a richly colored paisley in purple, yellow, green, and pink, this silky satin jacket is generously cut to hip level. Gathered sleeves pouf lightly at the shoulders, providing visual balance to the gently stuffed Nehru collar. Looped buttonholes, made from the same paisley print, run down the center front in tight succession and connect with smooth oval buttons. The cuffs also are stuffed, adding a delightful softness to the jacket’s overall appearance.
The large scale paisley pattern is positioned with care over the entirety of the jacket, creating a balanced look from all angles. Welt pockets are angled diagonally with the quilt stitching. Lined in pink satin, this coat can be paired with an elegant day ensemble, or worn to create a striking evening look. Saint Laurent’s jacket, as seen on Eve Nielsen (different color) on the cover of Vogue Italia in July/August 1974, is an excellent example of the way he challenged existing fashion trends.
As described by a mid-1970s New York Times article, “Saint Laurent’s presentation is so powerful that it’s irresistible….women of the world are ready to eschew practical clothes in favor of fun, fantasy and femininity.”
