Christain Lacroix Black & Gold Lace Layered Dress, 1990s

$0

Known for his opulent and theatrical designs, French designer Christian Lacroix launched his first Haute Couture collection in 1987. Drawing inspiration from history and folklore, his debut collection continues to resonate with contemporary artists. Named the “king of color” by Vogue in 1990, he often created striking color palettes that made his designs even more remarkable. Lacroix served as creative director for Pucci from 2002-2005, designed costumes for the Paris Opera Ballet, and notably partnered with Dries Van Noten in 2019 to critical acclaim.

From the 1990s, this incredibly beautiful dress is a fine example of Lacroix’s craftsmanship and embodies his exuberant teenage motto of “too much is never enough." Done in layers of gold and black lace, this dress is imbued with a fabulous, refined steampunk aesthetic. The bodice begins with a scoop neckline and long sheer lace sleeves with gold detailing near the wrists.

A black harness secures around the neck at the back, giving this dress a punk rock feel. At the base of the bust a layer of sheer black lace that has a touch of stretch cascades over the midi-length underskirt, creating a long overskirt that opens at the center front of the bodice in two long flounces. The black and gold Chantilly lace underskirt falls from just beneath the bust to a scalloped, high low hem that floats several inches above the ankles, creating an empire silhouette. A slit at the center front of the skirt follows the scalloped shapes of the lace pattern, introducing a beautiful risqué element that allows for greater ease of movement while making this dress even more fascinating.
