Pedro Rodriguez Floral Chiffon Beach Pajamas & Chiffon Cape, 1960s
Rather obscured by his friend Cristobal Balenciaga, fellow Spanish designer Pedro Rodriguez’ reign in fashion from the late 30s to mid 70s mainly was defined by his signature, lavishly embellished evening dresses. However, like any great designer, Rodriguez capitalized on the trend making them his own as seen with this rare 1960s chiffon pajama set.
Hosting pajamas for home entertaining in the 60s led to the development of stylish high-end loungewear that has as much drama as a runway look. Brightly done in a nylon jersey, pink, summer yellow, and coral florals. The fabric is extraordinarily light, capturing the essence of leisure.
The top has a simple bodice style with an added ruffle that circles around to reveal a dramatic and unique high back while the wide-legged pants end in a slightly ruffled cuff. The pointed ruffle detail provides a unique silhouette that hints at traditional Spanish style dress. Accompanying this ensemble is a hooded cape done in a chiffon of the same print. This cape layered with the pajamas plays beautifully with opacity and light offering a stained-glass effect.
