Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere Iconic Sculpted Jacket Runway Spring 2008
Exploring a newness while revamping classic Balenciaga, designer Nicolas Ghesquière took on the task of investigating bulbous volumes with a much shorter hemline. While original Balenciaga played with organic volume on a grand scale this 2008 collection brings it in closer to the body. Sculpturally constructed, this jacket is made from an Ultratech neoprene material with an elegant black and white floral rose print. The thickness of the fabric allows for it to hold its shape as curved seams around the shoulder give the sleeves a defined shape.
As a unique design feature, the neckline to this jacket is outfitted with hidden grommets and a drawstring for fitting while also adding a ruffling to the garment from the neck down. Radial darting modestly combats the undulating volumes drawing the garment literally and visually to have a more defined waist. Ending in an asymmetrical hemline, this jacket wonderfully dives into soft lines and dramatic volumes and can be seen as look #11 on that season’s runway.
