Norman Norell Couture Black Tailored Skirt Suit / Sleeveless Top, 1960s
Norman Norrell is one of the most notable American designers throughout history. Indiana born, Norrell was a keen womenswear designer working primarily in gowns but also in clean, tailored looks. Unconstrained by wild novelty, Norrell designs bear with then a subtle grandeur and timeless demeanor. This 1960s Norrell suit is tailored from a matte black slubbed wool.
The distinct texture of the slubbing creates for a contrast between the bias-cut top and the skirt balancing a dynamic and stable feel. The top rises high around the neck and has a softly molded fit throughout the torso ending in an ever-so-slight flounce at the hem. Strong horizontal features of the skirt ground the suit. A double tiered waistband references a 1950s high-waisted mood as the gathered skirt provides an airy volume. This suit is a perfect marriage of femininity and boldness making it perfect for events or the boardroom.
