Philip Treacy London Sculptural Ivory Black Feather Bouquet Hat
$0
Irish born designer Philip Treacy gravitated towards millinery from an early age. During a July 6, 1990 interview for WWD, the 23 year old designer observed that “In some cases the clothes are actually the accessory to the hat.” This c2003 piece models Treacy’s ongoing devotion to hat design and detail.
The crown is constructed from finely braided straw, which has been dyed black and coiled with perfection to form nearly vertical sidewalls. The top ridge of the crown creases in a delightful asymmetrical V-shaped dip at center front. A generous champagne ivory brim is constructed from woven fiber that flairs out expansively to the sides. A shallower brim at front and back prevent the face from getting lost beneath a stark cantilever. A thick satin hat band circles the base of the crown, terminating with a largely looped bow.
The hat culminates with a gorgeous bouquet of feathers at the left side, which skillfully compiles a range of textures from fluffy to spiky. This, along with the slightest of slants up towards the left side, creates a focal point that eases the high contrast of the black and white color scheme. The interior of the crown is finished with pleated and piped satin.
Treacy’s prowess comes from an innate enthusiasm for this uniquely sculptural element of a woman’s wardrobe. Concluding his interview, the young Treacy effused, “I absolutely love hats. There is something about them I can’t explain. I design all kinds of hats 24 hours a day. There is nothing else I want to do” [Fallon, J. (1990, July 6), WWD, 160(4)].
