Basha Gold
Magnificent Vintage Judith Leiber Gold Tassel Necklace Unsigned
Her name is synonymous with bejeweled minaudières—and for good reason. Judith Leiber has designed thousands of variations on the style, since making a name for herself in 1953 when Mamie Eisenhower carried one of her creations to the inaugural ball. Her elegant pillboxes and playful clutches inspired by koi fish, cupcakes, cameras and the like are housed in prominent museum collections and toted by celebrities such as Blake Lively, Emma Watson and Katy Perry.
While her jewelry is lesser known, it is equally as desirable. This necklace, from the 1980s, is just one example. Previously owned by a Judith Leiber collector, the piece embodies all the whimsy, sophistication and craftsmanship found in her handbags. At its center is a striking trompe l’oeil gold-tone tassel pendant artfully cast to appear as if its strands have been slightly ruffled.
Tiny white crystals with pointed backs are set into the pendant, forming what looks to be a thread knotting the tassel together and dangling down its front. Holding the pendant is a chain comprised of mini trompe l’oeil gold-tone tassels, each encircled by a band of additional crystals. Six more tassels fall from the chain, lending movement to the accessory. Wear it as a statement piece with eveningwear or layer it with other necklaces for an everyday look that will be entirely your own.
