Yves Saint Laurent Blue Silk Organza Spring 2012 Runway Dress

Stefano Pilati served as the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent from 2004-2012 following Tom Ford’s departure. Credited with starting the tulip skirt trend in the 2000s, Pilati’s fluid aesthetic was markedly different from Ford’s, and he often received acclaim for his youthful designs. Pilati’s Spring 2012 collection was his second to last for YSL, and featured ruffles and peplums alongside godet skirts and cape dresses. As seen on that season’s runway, this beautiful dress is a major design by Pilati and was featured in Harper’s Bazaar on Mila Kunis.

Done in a teal blue organza, this absolute gem of a dress is sophisticated and feminine at once. The sleeveless design begins with a plunging crisscross halter neckline and a flattering empire waist. The skirt falls from just beneath the bust to a mini length several inches above the knee, creating an A-line silhouette.

The dress is cut and draped to perfection, falling in soft ruffles at the front while the back is gathered in wide knife pleats. Short, sculpted ruffles extend from each hip to the upper thigh and circle around the back of the dress, adding a layer of volume and texture that gives the design a pleasing visual movement of its own and a flirtatious, celebratory air.
