Azzedine Alaïa Iconic Runway Butterfly Leggings, 1991
Azzedine Alaïa is perhaps one of the most notable designers of the early 21st century. Trained from an early age in the art of Parisian couture, Alaia worked under a variety of top design houses such as Dior, Guy Laroche, and Mugler before starting his own ready-to-wear-line in the 1980s. Alaïa's signature was drape and high-stretch fabrics that he used to masterfully sculpt around or fit to the form.
Made from one of his signature high-stretch knits, these leggings are from Alaïa's iconic Fall/Winter 1991 collection. On a pale beige ground, large butterflies are printed across the leggings with wings in tones of warm orange and lemon yellow. The leggings fit right at the waistline with the waistband having a double dashed line detail stitched around. With the warm tones of these leggings, they would pair well layered under a fall skirt or with a stylish sweater or shirt-dress.
