1970s Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Black Wool Falling Leaves Appliquè Cape

Launching in 1966, Yves Saint Laurent established his ready to wear house Rive Gauche. Wanting to dress for the modern, younger woman, Yves Saint Laurent incorporated elements of menswear, and designed around themes reflective of the progressive, late 20th century era. Saint Laurent’s Rive Gauche became international in 1975, opening its New York location in early fall. With close ties to high-profile persons in the contemporary art community such as Andy Warhol, and Diana Vreeland, Saint Laurent’s work frequently emulates a range of artistic influences.

This rare 1970s Rive Gauche cape of black virgin wool establishes a bold presence; however, the incorporation of the twelve superimposed suede leaf appliqués of green, and clay-tones provide a warm levity. Bordered with a pearl-stitch, these appliqués introduce a contrast of visual, and tactile textures. The dense wool fabrication, and the convertible collar, a subtle homage to YSL’s menswear attributions, not only establish a classic aesthetic but also would fare well functionally. This black virgin wool cape is fully lined in a soft, black, cotton jersey, and is in excellent condition. It drapes softly in an A-line silhouette with a slightly asymmetric hemline falling just below the knee. Though denotes as a size 36, due to the voluminous silhouette, this cape can accommodate a range of sizes. Two braided frog fasteners are positioned at the high chest allowing for the cape to be secured on the body, but effectively remains open at centre front. No arm slits, or openings are present.
