1960s Christian Dior Marc Bohan Demi Couture Red Velvet Florals Silk Skirt
Dior’s untimely death at the age of 52 in 1957 might have left the postwar fashion powerhouse in disarray. However, the expertise and beauty he inspired was skillfully adapted by Parisian born designer Marc Bohan. Bohan, who was 34 when he became Creative Director at Dior, was known as a perfectionist with a leaning towards luxurious fabrics.
This silk satin, which delicately bleeds a pattern of red velvet blooms, does not disappoint. The full body of this satin cocktail skirt is expertly pleated into the width of the waistband, reducing bulk and accentuating the silhouette of the wearer. Sitting just below knee length, the high quality of the construction is even evident to those who are not prone to noticing. Completely lined in silk organza, all interior seams and hems are finished by hand.
A handset zipper sits at left side; three hook and eyes and a handset snap secure the waistband. This versatile piece can be worn with silk chiffon or black cashmere. The Dior label has the original owner’s client number printed onto it, indicating that this was a custom piece for someone at Dior’s Parisian atelier. Needless to say, Bohan’s garments for Dior were worn by some of the most illustrious women in the world, including Princess Caroline and Princess Grace of Monaco.
