2007 Rei Kawakubo Comme des Garçons White Layered Tulle Skirt

$550

An exquisite fashion find, this Comme des Garçons skirt is a uniquely pretty take on avant-garde design. Part of the Japanese label’s spring/summer 2007 collection, it was inspired by Cubism, according to founder Rei Kawakubo. But the ballerina’s tutu had to be on her mind, too. Crafted from white tulle, the skirt floats ethereally from the waist to below the knees in layers and layers that conceal and reveal the human form beneath.

Additional layers of the wispy netting, which are finished with ruffles and gathers, lend volume and feminine flourish where least expected. The asymmetrical hemline enhances the imperfect perfection—a signature of Kawakubo’s and one of the many reasons she is only the second living person to be honored by an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. A red take on this skirt is featured in the exhibition book, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, another testament to its importance, collectability and remarkable beauty.
