Henri Bendel is one of the oldest and most prominent high fashion retailers in the United States. Establishing their start in 1896 as a millinery shop, Bendel’s soon became one of the first American retailers to sell copies French couture designs. Following a brief closure in the1950s, Geraldine Stutz revitalized the brand to focus on a more youthful audience through marketing more Mod styles. Made from a shocking emerald green silk shantung, this 1950s evening dress is a sophisticated tea-length design.
The dress features a smooth round neckline and a full, gathered skirt, a thick waistband, and a classic 50s style bodice with three large round plastic buttons at centre front. Fitted with vertical gathers all around the fullness is balanced by a plain yoke that extends off the shoulder to form shallow cap sleeves. A belt in a matching green shantung can be worn over the waistline of the dress and fits onto the lower button and can be affixed by hidden hand sewn snaps.
