1960s Sally Levison of London Crochet Color Block Jersey Maxi Dress

$0

The Sixties London scene wasn’t just about Mary Quant, Biba and Ossie Clark. Selling clothes from her South Molton Street boutique was also Sally Levison, highly sought out during the youthquake heyday for her incredible crocheted and knitted pieces — all hand-made on the Maltese island of Gozo before arriving in the bustling fashion capitol. Today the Victoria and Albert Museum still houses her work, making this gorgeous maxi dress an amazing collector’s find.

The bodice is iconic, with open loops throughout and an exquisite trim at the empire waist and band collar. A row of crocheted buttons leads down to a silky soft jersey ankle-length skirt, printed with a geometric pattern of rectangles in a delicious palette of brown, yellow, blue and white. Puffed cuffs, which span from the elbows to the wrists, are cut from the same fabric for a highly feminine flourish. Just in time for summer, this retro look with its stunning peekaboo top would be just as at home at a music festival as it would be for a evening out.
