1977 Yves Saint Laurent Floral Silk Chiffon Peasant Blouse Documented YSL

$0

Yves Saint Laurent dominated the runway during the 1970s. His bohemian-chic styles delighted those who had waning interest in the sharp lines of 1960s mod fashion. This silk chiffon blouse features a dense print of blue and green vertical stripes camouflaged by a field of flowers. The overall effect is one that Saint Laurent excelled at, transforming provincial style into high fashion.

The sleeves are both ample and light, with generous volume gathered into an encased elastic band at the wrist. Narrow French seams run the interior length of the sleeves, making the seam allowance barely visible through the semi-transparency of the chiffon. The fullness of the main blouse also gathers evenly into an encased elastic band at the neckline. Lined in light beige silk chiffon, the blouse flows beautifully over curves with airiness. Both cuffs and neckline are finished with an extended folded edge that splays open into a soft ruffle. The neckline can either be worn gently up on the shoulders or pulled off the sides.

This blouse was photographed for the March 1977 issue of Harper's Bazaar, where it is described perfectly. "Fresh from Paris comes this romantically soft spill of roses, all over the bare-shouldered silk peasant blouse, cotton zouave pants and slashed skirt. And they are just the beginning of a whole collection of fresh European ways to toss flowers in every part of your wardrobe". Photographed by Bob Stone.
