Balenciaga Josephus Thimister Runway Silk Polka Dot Evening Dress, 1997
Having worked for a several prominent couture houses such as Chanel and Patou, Josephus Thimister brought his modernist design style to the house of Balenciaga. In the Fall/Winter 1997 collection, Thimister introduced sleek, satin gowns that evoked the crisp, elegant volumes of 1960s Balenciaga. From that collection, this evening dress is made from an ivory silk speckled with large polka dots of black, mocha, and umber.
A shallow boat neckline transitions seamlessly into short batwing sleeves that flow into the tailored torso of the dress. Fitted with curved darts, the dress falls into a gently undulating A-line. On the back, this dress offers the surprise of a sexy scoop back with an explosion of flounces below the waist that cascade into a subtle train ultimately giving this gown a high-low hemline. Reverberating a modern yet 60s femininity, this Balenciaga gown is an exquisite vintage dress perfect for a classy, special occasion. It can be seen on the 1997 runway in the images above.
