Issey Miyake Black Pleated Spiral Skirt, 1990s
Issey Miyake is acclaimed for his awe-inspiring avant-garde designs that frequently make use of pleating and interesting plays with space and volume. While Issey Miyake continues to create incredible sculptural designs, the 1990s boasted some of his most iconic work. This skirt is made from an obsidian black micro-pleated fabric that has been assembled along a spiral with an overall pencil silhouette.
From a thin waistband, the skirt gently hugs the hips and then begins its spiral descent. The angle of the seaming paired with the pleats showcases a soft gleam that elevates this skirt’s futuristic aesthetic. At the hem, the spiral is ended with a creative flourish adding an element of surprise to the design.
Done in all black with a minimal design, this skirt is an easy yet creative way to add an element of interest to an outfit for almost any occasion. This skirt also has a corresponding dress version that was worn by Mary Kate Olsen in 2013.
