James Galanos Couture Beaded Floral Silk Mini Dress with Hooded Opera Coat, 1970
James Galanos is often a hidden gem of fashion. With his designs ranging from eccentric to presidential, Galanos’ work played a tremendous role in carving out the concept of American couture.
From the late 1970s, this Galanos cape/dress ensemble is crafted from a multicolored floral print with bright pinks, yellows, and greens all done on a delicate and sheer silk fabric that creates a fairyland effect when caught by the light. The cape is pleated round the neck allowing for a dramatic and whimsical effect as it cloaks the body. A voluminous hood completed the fantastical spirit.
The dress is a work of its own. Using the floral sheer to create a gathered skirt on an inverted Basque waistline, the bodice has been hand beaded with colorful, translucent beads in reds, yellows, greens that accent the silk in a vibrant and playful way. Across the neckline and straps, black beads have been applied to add contrast. Redefining a “pop” of color, this light-hearted Galanos dress is a testament of skilled craftsmanship and an era of joy and fun.
