James Galanos Couture Chiffon Dress with Sequin Lattice Straps, 1980s
$0
For decades James Galanos was heralded as one of the quintessential American designers. A favorite among celebrities, socialites, and the everyday woman, Galanos’ designs captured American culture through his soft glamor aesthetic. Referred to as “master of chiffon” by the New York Times, Galanos’ creations are easy to wear and elegant without being outlandish. Incorporating two of his signature design features: sequins and chiffon.
This circa 1984 dress is made from a fine silk chiffon printed with square swatches in tones of copper and raw umber. On the bodice shimmering channels of rhinestones and nude sequins move between the gridded squares adding a brightness to the dress. From a beautifully framed boat neck, sequins straps move to the back where the sequin strands create a simple lattice to the waist.
Vertical pleats extend down from the centre back waist creating a sense of volume while ensuring the dress maintains a clean and elongating column silhouette. A minimalist design carefully balanced with glitzy details makes for the perfect event dress that can be also styled as an elevated pre-fall look.
