Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons Orphic-Cubism Dress Runway, 2015
In true avant-garde form, Junya Watanabe’s Spring 2015 collection featured unexpected volumes, unconventional textiles, and bold color combinations. Paying homage to the orphic cubism style of artists and designers like Sonia Delaunay, Watanabe took a graphic futurist aesthetic in mind to create a series of looks that merged the lines between 2-D and 3-D.
From that collection, this dress is pieced from sections of faux patent leather vinyl in tones of ivory, white, cherry red, forest green, and violet. These pieces are arranged to appear as though various circles are overlapping and colliding with one another. The way in which the color shifts and voids in the vinyl has been arranged to give the garment the illusion of being two-dimensional.
A white organza forms the underdress that creates a starkly asymmetrical hemline and adds substantial volume to the left of the garment. This creative dress is an incredible statement piece and trompe l’oeil artwork. It can be seen as look #6 from that season’s runway.
