Marni Sculptural cotton Canvas Venus Print Dress Runway, 2019
Fashion has always taken inspiration from art in one form or another. In their Spring 2019 collection creative director, Francesco Risso—in more ways than one—took a sculptural and collage approach to create a collection that may very well redefine the concept of wearable art. Emblematic of Risso’s artistic vision, this dress is made from a cotton canvas with burnt sienna taffeta accents.
On the canvas, the displays a collage of printed cutout images of various Venus statues. These images are done in a variety of colors that add touches of cyan, magenta, yellow, and emerald to the dress. A taffeta yoke forms a jewel neckline then moves into the exposed princess seams on the bodice.
The collaged canvas extends to hip level as a canvas skirt with sanguine brush strokes is heavily gathered into this extension. This provides for statuesque proportional balance as the nipped waist blossoms into the bell-shaped skirt. On the back, the collaged canvas is fitted with waist pleats and extends all the way to the hem creating a reversed high-low hemline.
This Marni dress is unexpected and beautifully tailored. It is the perfect option for the woman looking for something a little more eclectic. This dress can be seen in the featured images as look #6 from that season’s runway.
