Yves Saint Laurent Couture Black Illusion Red Sequins Hat YSL, 1989

By combining various fabrics, embellishments and textures, Saint Laurent was a master of accessories on and off of the runway. From his 1989 Rive Gauche collection, this round brim hat not only combines textures, but various hat styles into one.

The crown is form from a black, lacquered plaited straw in a traditional pillbox form as the illusion brim radiates from there into a brim ridge covered in large scarlet sequins. Rather flamboyant, the mixture of textures adds an element of surprise to this hat. Due to the illusion brim, both the crown and brim ridge can appear to be floating in midair. A simple circle shape, the elements of this headpiece suggests a dressed-up attire with a degree of mystery.
